Seniors at the Big Picture

January 24, 2011 ~ From Sam Jackson, Senior English teacher~As their Senior English Course came to an end, the senior class followed up their reading of Jon Krakauer's Where Men Win Glory with a screening of the documentary film "The Tillman Story" at the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield. The film was part of the Big Picture's annual Mountaintop Film Festival, a celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. that features films about issues of social justice and human rights. Inspirational Initiative

January 24, 2011 ~On Friday, Sam Jackson addressed the school to introduce a pilot service program that GMVS will be undertaking: Saturday's Child. This program, developed by local skiers and students, will provide opportunities for students to interact with children with cancer. Alpine News

January 24, 2011 ~Inverness played host to a large field on Monday for the annual MLK GS, and the home team took home most of the goodies. The boys' podium was a GMVS sweep, with Danny Duffy '12 winning both runs to take the win. Behind him in second place was classmate Kendall Pasteris, with senior Miles Derrick cruising to third place. They had lots of company on the first page, as Tomek Dobrzanski '11 skied to 7th, followed in 9th by Kane Boynton '12. College Racing Starts

January 24, 2011 ~ The college carnivals in both the EISA and USCSA began in earnest last week, with racing at many different venues. As usual, GMVS alumni and current students featured in the results. On the EISA side, the St. Lawrence Carnival in Lake Placid saw UVM crush the field. In the guys' GS, though, a UNH skier, Chad Lawrence '09 had an impressive jump, landing in 8th place from start number 32. In the ladies' GS, guest skier Devin Delaney '09 was 8th, just ahead of Marie-Elaine Lepine '09 of UNH, who edged Jackie Maier '10 for 10th. Nordic News - Spector Again!

January 24, 2011 ~ In Nordic news, it has been pretty quiet as far as races (not many right now), but the big news was that Laura Spector '05 finished 23rd in World Cup biathlon on Friday in northern Italy. She has scored World Cup points 4 times this season and she will likely qualify for World Championships as the top American female. Biathlon

January 24, 2011 ~ In biathlon news on this continent, junior Antoine St-Louis continues to move up the ranks in the biathlon world. In Sunday's NorAm sprint in nearby Jericho, "'Toine" shot an impressive 16 of 20 targets en route to a podium finish in 3rd place. He is also in third place in the overall points standings for the season series.  Read more...

Nordic Nationals

January 12, 2011 ~ The big event this past week were the US Senior Nationals in Rumford, Maine, where a small group of our present crew joined several alumni in the action. In the junior classic sprint, David Sinclair '10 of Dartmouth took 5th, while in the under-23 sprint race, Doug DeBold '08 PG of Middlebury was 10th. In the men's free sprint, Tim Reynolds '04 won his quarterfinal race on his way to finishing 11th. Alpine News

The Alpine crew has been busy over the past weeks, with results coming in from all over. 2010 finished up with a few events not yet covered in Notes, and we start in Nakiska, Alberta, Canada, where the ladies raced FIS slalom and GS. Senior Sara Kikut opened things up in slalom with a 6th place, with twin sister Anna taking 11th. The next day saw PG Jackie Maier '10 jump to 9th place, with Anna finishing 13th. In GS, it was Maier collecting the team's best finish, a 6th place on the final day, with Anna Kikut behind her in 9th and classmate Katie Fitzpatrick a fraction of a second back in...  Read more...

Laura Spector '05 Among The World's Elite

GMVS alumna Laura Spector '05 continued her fantastic early season performance in World Cup biathlon, taking 19th in the mass start event in Oberhof, Germany. In making the mass start event, Spector became only the second US woman in history to qualify for the elite race, which is composed of the top 25 finishers in a sprint the day before. In the race, Laura missed only once on her way to scoring more valuable World Cup points as she leads the US team into the new year's races. Congrats, Laura! Alpine Results

December 22, 2010 ~  The FIS and USSA schedules were full this week, and we start with the Eastern Cups held at Sugarloaf, where many of our boys had some stellar results. In the opening GS, junior Brian McLaughlin jumped from 33rd place to 7th, behind Middlebury’s Andrew McNealus ’08 who grabbed 3rd place. Senior Sandy Vietze cut his start number in half to finish 13th as well. In the second race, Vietze was the story, jumping 26 spots to take second place, with PG Tucker Marshall hot on his heels in 3rd. Nordic News

December 22, 2010 ~ The TD Eastern Cup series opened for the Nordic skiers as well, as the skinny skiers took to the trails of Craftsbury, VT. The big news of the weekend was the dramatic win by sophomore Heidi Halvorsen in the 6k mass start classic race. She was even with her closest rival coming into the final sprint, and she held her off to win by just over one second! The other big story was the Class of 2004’s Tim Reynolds, as the Middlebury College alumnus took wins in both the 1.3k free sprint and the 12k classic. Daron Rahlves '91 Wins the Hüttenrallye in St Anton, Austria

December 22, 2010 ~  A pair of GMVS alumni are competing in the World Cup of Skiercross and today, Daron Rahlves '91 took home the gold.  Daron and and Pat Duran '03 are braving the bruising world of skiercross this winter and their first big event was today in the Red Bull Hüttenrallye, a wild event in which the racers jump over and swing around the various farm sheds and houses along the St. Anton mountainside. This famous Austrian resort is the site of Daron's victory in the 2001 World Championships Super G, so he should be raring to go. More on the event   Read more...

Annual Fund 2010-2011 Fund Raising has Begun

October 25, 2010~ The annual fund goal this year is $285,000 and to achieve this we will need the support of the entire GMVS community.      The biggest fundraising initiative at GMVS is the Annual Fund.  We solicit current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, trustee’s, friends and staff.  The AF is our financial backbone and helps us bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a GMVS education.  This year, in our efforts to be the best ski academy out there, we have increased our staff and programs by 15% yet we only asked for a 5% increase in tuition.  This...  Read more...
