Kelly Brush Century Ride 2014

KBR 2014By Jere BrophyIt is always a risky proposition to set one’s plan based on weather forecasts, and the 2014 edition of the Kelly Brush Century Ride proved this adage. Despite prognostications (some up until inside of 24 hours ahead of the event) calling for torrential rain and thunderstorms, the day dawned cloudy, and gave way to sun for nearly all of the ride, lending a sense of added good fortune to such a wonderful event. With the Chile camp moved up a week to counter the early spring in South America (only to be met with mid-winter conditions…another story), the GMVS crew was small...  Read more...

Tik Root

Tik Root ’08 is a slight, outwardly unassuming person. He has tousled black hair, wire frame glasses, and a hushed voice punctuated with pauses as he gathers thought and momentum. He was adopted from India when he was a year old and came to live in Ripton, Vermont. He grew up there, in the midst of an active family with a sibling and step siblings, attending Middlebury High School.  A rebellious streak may have taken hold there. The school only allowed for a ski racer to miss an allotted number of days. In this Catch-22, a student couldn’t seriously pursue ski racing and stay enrolled. So...  Read more...

Language Arts Students Invited to Say Anything!

The first book for Kerry Jackson's Language Arts class this year was a novel called Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. While the book deals with some tough topics, one take-away message of the novel is that people, especially young people, should develop their voices and speak their minds. In an effort to test the theory, Kerry gave each student an opportunity to Say Anything in short videos presented to the class. There were some clear patterns among them: a number of students' videos encouraged viewers to persevere through difficult times, and to stay positive and work hard to achieve goals....  Read more...

Teachers Tackle Assessments

Sweaty palms, heart palpitations, shortness of breath…these are the all too familiar visceral feelings when confronted with taking tests, SAT’s, or other academic assessments.  Whoa! ... what, we might wonder was THAT all about?   Well, “that” is all about measuring how close we have come to achieving specific learning outcomes.  As students and as educators, we recognize that acquiring content knowledge and developing the cognitive skills of critical thinking and problem-solving are important learning objectives.  But equally important is the development of non-cognitive skills such as...  Read more...
