Sam grew up outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then attended Brown University, where he played lacrosse. After college, Sam moved west to coach at Colorado College for a year. He then returned to Brown, where he helped coach the men’s lacrosse team to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament.  Sam left the college lacrosse world in 1994 to work with a juvenile offenders program based in Nevada and California. In 1996 he returned to the east once more to begin teaching at The Green Vale School in New York and then, in 1999, he moved to Episcopal High School in Virginia. In addition to teaching and coaching at GMVS since 2003, Sam has been coordinating service-learning projects here for many years. He has enjoyed taking groups of students on community service trips around the country and beyond. Sam lives in the Valley with his wife Kerry and daughter Quinn and gets out in his whitewater kayak or on backcountry skis whenever possible.
